, that wednesday's debate was certainly a big win for mitt romney, hands down. but observers are still criticizing him, actually, about not giving enough details. so, i want to read to you what a conservative columnist for "new york times" said right after the debate. romney had his share of lines and the stinctions he drew between romney care and obama care and didn't say anything about helping the uninsured. how do you respond to that? is it time for romney to give more specifics? is he having a problem with that? >> easy to criticize both of them for not giving enough specifics. romney has a 59-point economic plan that most people have never looked at. i would say that is probably too specific. i think mitt romney should focus on saying things like, mr. president, we are, you seem to have a problem with profits, which my company made. but most americans have a problem with deficits, which you've rung up four consecutive trillion dollar deficits. they both have a little problem with details. but there is a big, i would strike a big contrast if i was mitt romne

where do you think things are right now, john? >> i think the president's team is saying this was all a show. this was artifice and fakery in the 90 minutes of debate and at his core mitt romney is dishonest. it got a new coming out of the campaign, that's the charge they're making, that he is not telling the truth in the attempts to get back at the central character question here, which is at the center of this debate. we know both candidates have said we're going to have to shrink government. there's a difference between the promises of what government makes and what people are willing to pay for and at the end of the day who is going to make that decision? the president is. and are you going to trust them. >> schieffer: am i the only one who knows who gantry is. >> that'sa bit of a stretch. elmer gant revis a creep. mitt romney is a very successful businessed man, has had a fine career, a fine family. look, both candidates, i think told things that stretched the truth. mitt romney with the preexisting conditions. remember barac

so does mitt romney's strategy of saying one thing and then right afterward have his campaign walk it back actually work? alan schroeder is a professor at northeastern university, the author of presidential debates 50 years of high-risk tv. professor, glad to welcome you back into "the war room." is team romney's little two-step with the truth effective? >> you know, unfortunately, i think that strategy is sort of effective and here's the analogy i would use. it's like the newspaper article that gets something wrong. everybody reads the story and gets the mistake in version of what happened but the correction that comes out the next day is on page 35 in a little box and nobody sees it. and so that's what happens here. it really has to get corrected during the debate and that was the job of course of barack obama and for whatever reason, he didn't do it. >> jennifer: let it go means that you end up missing the opportunity to set the record straight in front of 50 million people. we talked about this last night. -- last time, whether it is a better strategy to spend your time rebutting

right exactly i mean the whole strategy of the obama team has been to portray met romney as an unacceptable choice in various ways to portray him as an extremely rich man who doesn't understand ordinary people's problems to portray a must someone who has on acceptably unacceptable tax policies that really favor the rich excessively that strategy came undone to a certain extent last night and i think that romney did really play his hand pretty strongly in terms of both protesting that he did have a concern for so-called ordinary people and also suggesting that rightly or wrongly that his tax plan was more fair or less favoring the wealthy although let's talk about just because of exactly nihilo me ask you it was a political malpractise for obama not to mention the forty seven percent. political malpractise really strip it strange it was very surprising it was very very surprising that has been the big issue for the past couple of weeks in this campaign and it played perfectly into the case that obama is trying to make that romney simply doesn't care now perhaps obama was trying to sort of fl

governor romney saying he's never suggested such a thing. who is right on that? >> well, it is one of the instances where they're both right, or both wrong depending how you want to look at it. what governor romney has proposed is to cut tax rates by 20% and eliminate the estate tax and alternative minimum tax. when you do that over ten years you put $5 trillion hole in your revenue. so that's where obama gets $5 trillion tax cut. but governor romney says he will make up that money through eliminating loopholes, tax deductions that sort of thing but he hasn't specifically said which one his would target. but that's how he can say, i don't have a $5 trillion tax cut. obama can come back and say you haven't given specifics how can we believe it really adds up. in fact every study nonpartisan that has looked at this has said that you know, unless you really tweaked the numbers, there's not justify money out there to fill that $5 trillion hole. >> so, glenn, the president said she's the guy plan to cut $4 trillion in the deficit. here's how he describes that plan. >>
